When you have a routine, where you keep doing the same thing over and over again, you’re actually physically changing your brain and neural pathways. These routines become hard wired habits.
Literally
Your prefrontal cortex, the executive functioning part of the brain, initially will need to think about it, but the more and more you do something eventually it becomes ingrained and will move to be stored in the back of the brain where following the routine will require less energy and you develop an automatic neural pathway.
When you do this it’ll become easier to follow through on your healthy habits and reach your weight loss goals and maintain them long term.
So it doesn’t take up so much of your energy. It’s just naturally happening as part of your routine.
That’s why developing Sustainable Routines is my next Body Freedom Principle.
This can only happen when you’ve developed your routines into habits, where they become second nature and you know what you need to do without stressing about it.
In your weight loss journey, it is essential to take the time to create the routines that will become habits
I have seen many people that have lost weight but are haphazard about maintaining the routines afterwards.
They will reach their goal and think “yay! I did it!” and then they stop doing a lot of these habits to maintain them.
It’s like a part of them checks out and then all the old cravings and bad habits creep back in because they’ve been doing those for far longer than their healthy habits.
Yes it takes energy in the beginning, but eventually it will become an unconscious routine.
It’s the only way it’s going to become second nature.
You don’t have to think about your meals, what to eat, when to eat, how much etc…
When you create these habits you have a healthy mindset and it starts to become something automatic you don’t have to struggle to think about.
It becomes a way of BEING.
It’s not just about hitting a number on the scale, it’s about truly being liberated from the whole experience of having to deal with weight loss again.
Change is always hard and that includes changing ourselves. But growth comes from learning from the challenges we face and knowing your values and what’s most important to you.
Sticking to your goals when things get tough takes courage and inner strength. But, you’ll come out the other side a better person more in tune with who you are and what you can handle.
